Mission statement:
Williamstown Community and Education Centre Inc. provide support, skill development and social activities. We deliver quality adult education programs which reflect the interests and needs of all sectors of the community.
We have a strong commitment to the use of new learning technologies to improve learning outcomes for our community. Our aim is to make the community aware that we supply affordable quality programs in a supportive comfortable environment.
Information and referral services are offered as an integral part of our Centre.
History:
- Servicing the community for 33 years. Established 1974.
- Changing to meet community need, growing from small beginnings offering craft groups and playgroups to meet new challenges such as the education needs of migrants and accredited programs.
- Registered with ACFE since 1984, providing language and literacy classes for the past 23 years.
Governance:
- Managed by a community based committee of management.
- Incorporated - Not for profit.
Educational Programs:
- Experienced provider of adult education providing education to 850 students in 2006.
- ACFE funded language, literacy, numeracy and vocational programs.
- Introductory classes in computers from absolute beginners to more advanced.
- Hobby, craft, health and well being classes.
- After school hours educational programs.
Other programs and services:
- Occasional childcare, which meets the requirements as set out by the Department of Children’s Services.
- Pre-school activity groups.
- Support and referral services for students accessing our programs.
- Neighbourhood house program to provide community development programs for the area, including such things as a drop in session for disadvantaged people, tax help for people with health care cards etc.
- Volunteer program.
- Provision of work site for Community Corrections workers.
- Emergency Relief – WCEC auspices the Emergency Relief Program in the local community by providing food vouchers, financial counseling and guidance to those in need.
- Social support for the elderly and frail is offered through our “Floydies Program”.
Spotswood Community House is auspiced and managed by our Centre and operates 5 days a week from 598 Melbourne Road Spotswood.
- Spotswood Community House offers a range of craft, social support, and children’s after school classes, playgroup and leisure activities. We also currently host a literacy class. Our cosy venue is a friendly place to meet others and have fun learning new skills. Ideas for new classes are always welcome.
