Coles Community Grant for Angliss NH & Yarraville CC

Angliss Neighbourhood House and Yarraville Community Centre have been funded under the Coles Community Grants Project to develop and expand the topic of nutrition, a component of the Health and Safety module in English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum. The development and design of this curriculum would expand the topic of nutrition to the community utilizing the ESL and Basic Adult Literacy Frameworks currently in use in the community and TAFE educational sector. The curriculum and associated resource materials will use ESL classes as vehicles to educate and raise awareness about nutrition and wellbeing in an established environment where a rapport and trust between student and teacher already exists. The module would provide information and resources on the purchase, recognition, preparation, dietary considerations and cultivation of fruit and vegetables available in Australia. The curriculum will be accessible to all community members as well ESL students. For many new arrivals and local community members from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds a sound knowledge and understanding of Australian fresh produce and varied foodstuffs is compromised due to a lack of information and resources, and availability in their first language. By accessing existing ESL and Basic Literacy programs that target the CALD community the subject of nutrition can include substantial information that can contribute to alleviating this lack of understanding and an increase of knowledge through crossing cultural barriers.
