Angliss Neighbourhood House Receives Investing in Community Education and Training Funding

Angliss Neighbourhood House was successful in their application to the Investing in Community Education and Training (ICET) funding deed under the Teaching and Learning Capital Fund (TLCF) for Vocational Education and Training (VET).

The Angliss Neighbourhood House is located in a public housing estate situated in Footscray within the City of Maribyrnong.The estate has few services and a high level of socio-economic disadvantage as indicated by the socio-economic disadvantage index of 827.

A welcome addition to the Yarraville Community Centre refurbishment program

The Yarraville Community Centre building fund has now been expanded with the announcement of $838,000 funding as part of the Investing in Community Education and Training program.

The funding will enable Yarraville Community Centre to fully complete the restoration and refurbishment program, and involves training rooms, Information Technology, kitchen fit-outs, disability access, installation of solar panels, double glazing, signage and recognition ceremony.

The Yarraville Community Centreexpects to move its programs and services back to the centre in mid January 2010.

As Neighbourhood Houses in Brimbank we acknowledge that volunteers are the backbone of our vibrant community. The Brimbank Volunteer conference is therefore an opportunity to thank you all our quiet achievers who generously donate their time to make Brimbank a better place to live, work and play.

New Resources for ESL learners

Angliss Neighbourhood House and Yarraville Community Centre have developed some interesting and useful resources for ESL learners.

Looking outside the Square provides a huge list of available resources, as well as numerous of activities, units of work, games and information on a PD session run for teachers. The resources were developed in response to feedback from teachers who indicated that there was a scarcity of relevant and affordable learning materials and resources for pre-literate students.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Looking for Mentors

I am a Mentoring Coordinator with Big Brothers Big Sisters Melbourne which is a youth mentoring not-for-profit agency. Myself and two of my colleagues who work in the Western region of Melbourne are currently undertaking a recruitment drive for volunteer mentors. for more information please download the information sheet attached.

Learning Beyond the Bell

Learning Beyond the Bell in conjunction with Williamstown Community and Education Centre, is committed to developing educational opportunities for students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Williamstown Community and Education Centre will provide children of migrants and refugees a place and teacher, outside school hours where assistance will be given with homework/assignments and general school work.

Duke Street’s Citizen of the Year

On the 26th of January 2009, Bronwen Merrigan of Duke St Community House was awarded Brimbank’s highest honor: Citizen of the Year. Hundreds of people including Bill Shorten Parliamentary Secretary, Brimbank Mayor and Telmo Languiller attended a glittering Australia day ceremony at Sunshine Marketplace Shopping Centre to both bestow Australian citizenships to new citizens and to announce Bronwen Merrigan’s Citizen of the Year Award.

Yarraville CC & Anglis NH Produce Postcards

Participants from both the Yarraville Community Centre and Angliss Neighbourhood House were given the opportunity to design a postcard that encapsulates and celebrates the rich diversity of the City of Maribyrnong. The designs judged the most appropriate were then printed commercially and distributed as a free, collectable postcard available at recreational venues, libraries, community agencies and the various café’s and restaurants located within the city of Maribyrnong. Participants from both centres were invited and encouraged to submit images (in any medium) for consideration.

After 10 years at Sth Kingsville we Bid Adieu to Cheryl

After 11 years Cheryl is leaving South Kingsville Community Centre. We are having an informal afternoon tea to say farewell to Cheryl and you are invited to join us.
